Islamabad (ENN) Pakistani News channels have been taken off air followed by the instruction of Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA), after the live coverage of operation launched on Faizabad Sit-In in the morning.
According to sources Federal government directed PEMRA to take off air all news channels and after such directions PEMRA ordered cable operators to take off the transmission of all news channels.
Pemra issued notification on Sunday regarding restoration of news channels followed strong resistance by media houses and journalist unions.
All news channels went off air from 1:05 Pakistani time. According to senior journalist Talat Hussain that PEMRA chairman told him that Prime Minister directly issued orders to take off air channels.
Channels went off air in various cities including Islamabad. Channels had been taken off air by a former dictator Musharaf in 2007 as well.
Later social media sites facebook, Twitter and you tube were blocked as well.
