KARACHI (ENN) It has been about 22 years on but the case of Mir Murtaza Bhutto yet to be decided and the killers could not be identified even after two decades.
Mir Murtaza Bhutto, the son of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto and Nusrat Bhutto and, the brother of former prime minister Ms. Benazir Bhutto was murdered on 20th September 1996 in Karachi when his sister was the prime minister of Pakistan.
The elder son of ZAB was born on 18th September 1954 and he led the movement while sitting outside the country against the then dictator Zial-ul-Haq.
He had returned to Pakistan in 1993 and was arrested for terrorism on the orders of his sister, then-Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto. Later released on bail, Murtaza successfully contested elections to the Sindh Provincial Assembly, becoming a vocal critic of Benazir and her husband Asif Ali Zardari.
He was allegedly killed with his six associates in an encounter near his house known as 70 Clifton. Mir at that time was the member of provincial assembly of Sindh and the chief minister was the father of present CM Sindh.
The government of PPP was toppled a month later followed by the assassination of Murtaza Bhutto by PPP’s own elected president Farooq Laghari.
Asif Zardari was alleged and indicated in the murder but was released.
Renowned journalist Hamid Mir told in TV talk show that PMLN’s Nawaz Sharif and others took him and three other senior journalists to Bhorbhan in 1996, where they told them that soon MNS will be the prime minister; therefore they should not criticise their government atleast initial 100 days.
Hamid Mir asked how it’s possible as PPP is in power and president was also loyal to party but they said something big would happen soon and government will be dissolved.
Mir Murtaza is laid to rest in his ancestral graveyard at Kharhi Khuda Bux near Larkana district of Sindh province.
