JACOBABAD (ENNS) Media to accurately mirror our societies will have to produce coverage that is complete and diverse, it is critical that the news reflects the world as seen through the eyes of women as well as men, observed the participants of a one day workshop on “Gender Trans-formative Approaches and Gender Responsiveness” organized by Community Development Foundation (CDF) in collaboration with Rutgers Pakistan here on Friday at a local hotel.
They said media will have to change the attitudes by portraying women as they really are rather than re-enforcing gender based stereotypes and women need to be represented in management and decision making roles.
“Journalists and editors must work through challenges being faced by vulnerable groups and come up with their own creative ways of navigating these delicate but critical issues when talking about gender equity”, they further added.
Speakers and participants said media being a watch dog should support the survivors and the victims instead of creating space for perpetrators. They said journalists must educate themselves on gender issues for better reporting.
Senior journalist S. B. Khoso, Chief Executive Officer of CDF Muhammad Jan Odhano, Lala Hassan, lead trainer and human rights defender, Guld Buledi, Nadim Bahrani, GM Jamali, Imran Sarki and others said journalists should be very careful while reporting the survivors and victims of gender based violence.
Abdul Hayee Soomro, Yahya Ghunio, Afshan Nawaz, Sagar Bhatti, Hafeez Bhatti and others observed that inspite of many hurdles and lack of capacity rural journalists were reporting on humanitarian issues effectively. They said rural journalists should be engaged in trainings on human and development issues.
